7 Signs It’s Time for a New Roof in Louisiana

Completed shingle roof replacement on a Lafayette home

Louisiana is hard on roofs. Long, hot summers bake shingles, heavy rain tests every seam, and a single tropical storm can do years of damage in an afternoon. Knowing the warning signs helps you catch problems early, before a small repair turns into a ceiling leak.

Here are seven signs it may be time to replace your roof rather than patch it.

1. Your roof is getting old

Most asphalt shingle roofs are built to last roughly 20 to 25 years, and Louisiana’s heat and humidity can shorten that. If your roof is approaching that age, have it inspected even if you don’t see problems yet.

2. Curling, cracked, or missing shingles

Shingles that curl at the edges, crack, or blow off in storms can no longer shed water properly. A few damaged shingles can often be repaired; widespread damage usually means the roof is near the end of its life.

3. Granules in the gutters

Asphalt shingles are covered in granules that protect them from the sun. If you find piles of granules in your gutters or at the bottom of downspouts, your shingles are wearing out.

4. Leaks and water stains

Brown stains on ceilings, peeling paint, or damp spots in the attic are signs water is getting through. Leaks rarely fix themselves, and trapped moisture can lead to rot and mold.

5. A sagging roofline

A roof that dips or sags can point to water damage in the decking or problems with the structure underneath. This needs a professional look right away.

6. Daylight in the attic

If you can see light coming through the roof boards from inside your attic, water can get in too.

7. Storm damage

After high winds or hail, look for lifted or missing shingles, dented flashing, and debris on the roof. Storm damage isn’t always visible from the ground, so an inspection is worth it after a major storm.

Repair or replace?

If the damage is limited to one area and the rest of the roof is in good shape, a repair may be all you need. If you’re seeing several of the signs above, or your roof is near the end of its expected life, replacement is usually the better long-term investment.
